Is it just me or have movies lost their substance in recent times ?!

Question: Is it just me or have movies lost their substance in recent times !?
basically im trying to say that modern day movies focus mainly on big special effects and massive budgets, and have lost the traditional well scripted plot that makes a movie, this can only be reflected through example, so id point the finger at spiderman 3, cloverfield and an unimaginable amount of really trashy horror films like the breed!. if we look back a few years stuff like rocky, aliens, the shining, they set the benchmark for good movies, these days the plots are trash to be honest, the last good movie i saw was juno!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think PEOPLE have lost their substance and prefer mind-numbing, unoriginal, formulaic, good looking, feel good flicks that require little thought over "heavier" types of movies!. Studios just happen to pitch to the masses as their main concern is their own bottom line!. Look around Yahoo answers, for example, and see how many people are raving about them vapid Jonas people and their Camp Whatever film or the last Indiana Jones!. Look again and tell me how many are talking about "No Country For Old Men"!.

There are some good films being made and many really do pack a punch as potent as the films you mentioned!. You just have to look in the right places to find them!. Just last year there was The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, Juno, Lars and The Real Girl, Persepolis, Atonement, No Country For Old Men, Gone Baby Gone, There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton, Charlie Wilson's War, Enchanted, The Namesake, The Life of Others and The Orphanage, all pretty great!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I agree with you on just about everything you say, including Juno!. I would add Lars And The Real Girl as another gem!

The film industry has always been formulaic in its approach to marketing, which is hardly surprising!. It just so happens we are going through a fallow period for original films breaking through and onto the distribution merry-go-round!.

Back in the seventies we just took for granted that new people like Coppolla, Scorcese, Spielberg and Lucas were getting their work shown, we will just have to wait for a new crop to emerge!. In the meantime, the occasional hidden gem will have to suffice!Www@Enter-QA@Com

definitely films will never be as good as they were in the 80's and even before that, fact is as effects get better people become more interested in what they can pull off with special effects instead of the substance in the film, the only half decent film i have seen recently was pan's labyrinth, and thats a foreign film!.

foreign films are always better than hollywood in all honesty!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

There are still some diamonds in the rough, but they seem to be pearls before swine, if you don't mind my mixing metaphors!. Indepenedent films like "Juno," or main-stream director's work like "Letters from Iwo Jima" are still available!.

Real stories with interesting characters in believable plots are still out there, but they tend to make little money, so Hollywood rejects them in order to make third-remakes of bad comic-book movies, or another third-rate gore-fest or still another remake of a mediocre TV show!. These will still be the bread-and-butter of Hollywood for as long as people (teens and young adults) keep shelling out $9!.50 USD to see garbage like "Get Smart!."Www@Enter-QA@Com

Mainstream film for the most part, yes!.

That's why so many people, especially as they leave their teens and twenties, begin to notice the worlds of independent and foreign film!. Unfortunately, it seems to be the only places to find truly artistic and pure filmmaking anymore!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Tis true!.!.

I think its because its ALL about the money now!.
And horrors are more about the gore which ruins it entirely for me!.!.because technically its not horror anymore, we want it back!!
Japan do some pretty gd stuff! the japanese version of the ring was one of the most terrifyin things ive seen in a while!Www@Enter-QA@Com

The reason that Hollywood produces so much crap is that they know their audience!. The average movie goer today wouldn't know a good script, or a good performance if it bit them on the @ss!.

My nephews refuse to watch any movie that was filmed in black & white!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

yeh, i think they are running out of good plots, film directors are often wannabes who somehow manage to get up there, we need people with creativity and vision!!!Www@Enter-QA@Com

having watched mamma mia last night, i'm going to agree!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Letters From Iwo Jima!. Probably the best film in the last 5 years!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
