I'm confused about character development?!

Question: I'm confused about character development!?
I thought I knew what character development was until I talked to my friend (a film student)!. The way I saw it!.!.!.it had to do with who the characters are!.!.!.not what they are (like their career)!. I know things like their interests and the way they act in social situations can be used to develop the character!.!.!.but when it comes right down to it!.!.!.it has to do with character traits, such as passionate, wise, quiet, etc!. My friend says that two characters could have identical character traits, but still be completely different!. I asked how that was possible, and he said that is what I need to figure out!. With that, he walked away!.

So, if they have the exact same character traits, but they are supposedly different, doesn't that just mean they are different by what they are and not who they are!?

I should point out that my friend and I have very different views!. He thinks very little of character development!. He's a director at heart!. I'm a writer at heart, but with less experienceWww@Enter-QA@Com

Character development is all about the Why question!. Why does a character do what he does!? Why did he choose the career (or lack of) he is in!. Think of "Fight Club"

This movie is huge huge on character development!. There are very significant differences within the character(s)!. Its all about what makes that certain person tick!.

Sad for your friend!. A good director must be very skilled in character development or else how can you ever tell a good story!? That is what a director is, a storyteller!. The best ones rope you in with who the person is and how they show it on screen!. Send me a message and we can kick the idea around!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Its the development of personal traits, throughout the film, due to what they are, or what occurs!.
You can have 2 people with identical traits in a film, but the different events that occur in the film can develop them into two different characters!.
Take Anakin & Luke Skywalker - both very similar in there young adult years, but while Anakin was secretly prepped by Palpatine and turned evil, Luke was more fortunate and followed the path of good!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Character development to me (a person unschooled in film and theatre) is showing multiple sides to a person!. For example, showing that the crewel villan has a soft side or as in the recent Spider man movies that the Hero is, at times, villanous!. The Lord of the Rings IMO shows a lack of Character development (probably because of time constraints) in tht Frodo has basically two expressions!. One tired and burdened, the other mean and yelling!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Two characters can have the same traits and still be different if the degree to which each trait affects their personalities differs!. Jim and Al can both be greedy but Jim's greed is more dominant in that he would betray a friend for the right price whereas Al is greedy to a lesser extent in that he is always looking for more, but not at the expense of hurting someone!.

Traits affect characters on a sliding scale from sometimes exhibiting a trait to a trait being dominant over all other aspects of personality!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
