Does anyone else think it's inappropriate for a school to use a PG-13 movie !

Question: Does anyone else think it's inappropriate for a school to use a PG-13 movie for their 6th grade party!?
A friend of mine is really frustrated, and I agree with her!. Her daughter is one of the top students in the class, and they're planning a pizza and movie reward party for all the 6th graders who reach a goal of reading 25 books in a certain allotted time!. But the movie they chose is PG-13!. I think it should be up to parents, of course if they want their 11 year olds to be allowed to watch PG-13 movies, but I feel like for a school to provide one as the reward for that age group is out of line!. And not fair to those families who do choose to hold out until their children are older!. It's not even like they're doing this as an educational thing, it's not an educational movie, it's purely for entertainment as a reward!. Am I being ridiculous!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

I am currently working on my Masters in Education and I must tell you that it is inappropriate for all of the reasons that you stated!. The appropriate action for the teacher would have been to send a list of possible movies for children to view and have the parents of each child check off which movies they would approve of!. The movies that all parents agreed on would be a good choice and if the parents cannot agree on any movie then an alternative for a movie needs to be planned!. In my opinion, it sounds like the teacher is being a bit lazy in that she decided on a movie and did no further work in identifying whether of not her choice would be appropriate for ALL parties involved!. I would have no problem with my child viewing a PG13 movie, but some parents would be offended and it is the teacher's responsibility to respect all possilbe opinions!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yeah sometimes it all goes down to which movie is being watched!. Some movies are PG-13 because of a the large amount of action but it's not like theres any bad words or graphics!. I guess if the movie has a alot of kissing and innappropriate words, then it is a little irresponsible to watch it!. I recommend you to watch it first then talk to the school or something!. Hope this helps! :)Www@Enter-QA@Com

No offense but yeah you are being rather ridiculous to some degree!. Schools wouldn't show any movie, regardless of rating, if they saw it as inappropriate!. I'm more than sure the school officials will take a look at the movie and review BEFORE showing it to the students!. Not all PG-13 movies are bad enough to were younger kids can't see it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yes you absolutely are!. The students earned the reward!. Did the parents read 25 books in an allotted time!? No, the students did, therefore they should be able to choose their own reward!. Honestly, there is nothing in a PG-13 movie that would shock or offend an eleven year old!. You would be surprised what they know and see!. If it is such a big deal, pull the student out of school for the day, but I can not see what is wrong with this!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i think it is fine, i have been a nanny for 3 children for the last 4 years the youngest just turned 12, and believe me they find a way to watch the movies u don't ant them to anyway!. The best thing u can do is view the movie first to see how u feel about it, but that doesn't mean they aren't going to see them!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

First of all I would let the parents know what movie it is and send out a permission slip so that parents can choose for their child to participate or not!. Usually PG-13 movies are not that innapropriate, then again it depends on the movie and the parents boundaries!. Hope this helps!Www@Enter-QA@Com

yes and no!. its normal to be concerned, but put yourself inn their position, sum of them are mature of and are stuck watching G movies!. My sister is in 6t and VERY knowledgeable about sum things she shouldn't know!. that could be from movies but, its my opinion that they aremature enough!. also if there are 2 rooms, there could be a G movie in 1 and a PG 13 in another!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I agree with you!. Some PG-13 movies are becoming borderline R films!. Language, sex, you name it has evolved since the older PG-13 standard!.
Even one F word can be slipped into PG-13 movies and most of them take advantage of that opportunity!.
I would take to the school and suggest a more "family friendly" film!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

no, you're not being ridiculous!. it says 13 and under require parental consent!. the school should send home permission slips asking parents!. and if parents don't want it shown, then they can play finding nemo or something!. a G movie!. that's ridiculous!. when did the school start deciding what is best for a child anyway!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

first of all the end of a 6th grade class should mostly be 12 years old

and it all depends on the movie

my 8th grade class watched Dodgeball and Star Wars III on a feild trip!.

FYI the movie the Graduate (has nudity), all the star wars (except 3) and Jaws are all PG

it all goes by what movie it isWww@Enter-QA@Com

well i am a student and i love to watch movies that are not kidish but they should have a permision slip because some families are protective and want wait till their child is the right age!. but the school would not have movie with "adult content" maybe some fighting but thats all!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

it is not a big deal at all
the kids all know about everything at that point anyway- at least everyone i knew at that time did
the schools are only required to send out a permission slip if it is an R rated movie i think anyway
what movie is it- that is a big factor alsoWww@Enter-QA@Com

I think it is okay, as long as they send home a note that the parents sign that says its ok!. or the parents can say that they would rather their kid not watch the movie!. yes, i agree, it should ultimately be up to the parents!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well!.!. i guess it should be up to the parents but your kid i'm pretty sure is getting exposed to PG13 stuff already!. Some movies that are PG13 aren't even bad but some might have humor that you might not agree with!.!.!. but yeah!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

no you aren't!. I dissagree with it to!. I was allowed to watch pg-13 in 6th grade but my paerents almost didn't let me!. I think it's stupid!. Good job of your friend's daughter reading all those books!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

When I was in sixth grade everyday was and R rated movie!. Some kids use R rated dialogue constantly so seeing a PG-13 movie shouldn't be a big deal!. I also agree with j420 100000%!Www@Enter-QA@Com

you really need to see what movie it is, i mean every movie got its point!.!.!. their not completely bad
PG-13 is ok, reallyWww@Enter-QA@Com

No because most kids no matter where you live everyone is exposed to a pg-13 life everyday!. Pg-13 is overated now a daysWww@Enter-QA@Com

u r being ridiculous i am a 7th grader and i would not be that bad of a movie if they r showing it so calm down it is not like its a movie about sexWww@Enter-QA@Com

i think you are overreacting
kids watch worse things
on t!.v!. and the internet
relax you ridiculous personWww@Enter-QA@Com

Yes you are being ridiculous sorry to say!. But the things they see in 6th grade are just as bad as a PG 13 movieWww@Enter-QA@Com

no because most six graders should be able to see a pg13 movie!. i could see those in like 5th grade!Www@Enter-QA@Com

yes you are being ridiculus!. let the kid watch the movieWww@Enter-QA@Com

Not at all!.

Our school even had us sign a waiver for a PG movie!. I would be making some phone calls in protest if I were you----or her!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

largely depends on the movie!. I would preview it first and then decide!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

let em watch wat they want!.
u must be sad to think its wrong to let them watch a PG13!. jeezWww@Enter-QA@Com

well just becuase its PG-13 doesn't make it really bad!. Transformers was rated PG-13Www@Enter-QA@Com

like the other person said it depends on the type!.besides if u sign a permision slip they can show u anythingWww@Enter-QA@Com

It entirely depends on what the movie is!. They mark movies as pg-13 for the crazyst reasons sometimes!. When I was n sixth grade we watched a rated R movie!. Of course, it was for educational reasons, and we skiped the so called 'bad parts', honestly, they weren't that bad anyway!. But still, the school made sure we had permission slips in before watching, maybe your school should have done that!. My suggestion is to look over reveiws, and find out more about the movie they are watching before ruleing out watching it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think it is definitely out of line by 2 years - PG 13 means for Parental Guidance for kids under 13 year old - not "school" guidance - period!. This is just my opinion and I would definitely be contacting someone in the school board - principal about it!.
I know some people say how strict etc!.!.!., but I kind of wish my parents wouldn't have let me watch PG 13 and R movies when I was a youngster because it made me do some really stupid things as a kid, just from watching movies where I learned those things!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

depends!. pirates of the caribbean and some of the harry potter movies are pg-13!. i'm in 9th grade and we watched a few rated R movies, just for violence (war battles, history class)!. those ratings are a little over the top too, most kids do watch pg-13 movies and the teacher wouldn't allow it to be anything bad!. don't worry!. they probably wanted something fun instead of some g-rated disney movie, there's nothing wrong with it!. if you have a problem with it, ask what the movie is, review it, and offer some other movies!. or just let your kid have fun, it's the end of the year and whatever the movie is, they've all probably seen more violent things in cartoons and other TV shows before that movie!. even if you don't allow it, let this be a real treatWww@Enter-QA@Com
