He imagined how he wanted the movies to be!. Then realized that in 1977 he did not had available the technology to do what he wanted to do with Episode I, Episode II or Episode III, therefore he started with Episode IV because for that one, the cheese special effects available in 1977 were good enough!. Then he dedicated his fortune to develop the special effects technology to be able to complete his saga!.

He did not had the complete saga written before filming A New Hope, maybe some concepts but not all!. As the years passed and he realized the important character Darth Vader become!. He decided to film another triology centered on Anakin Skywalker and change the complete saga to be focussed on Anakin Skywalker:
* from discovery as a child,
* rise as a hero,
* tragedy of his fall
* be the evil villian,
* redemption and death
If you think on the original you may think the story was about Luke, that was completely changed!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

My dad told me that the movie producers were unsure of whether anyone would like his screenplays, since that type of science fiction wasn't popular then!. So they released what they thought was the most exciting movie!. It was so popular they decided to continue the series, and had to make the 5th, as the 1st following the 4th wouldn't have been cohesive!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Really, be thankful he did make 4, 5, & 6 first!. I believe if Lucas made TPM first, I don't think the studios would have backed the rest of his ambitious project!. The Duel between Darth Maul, Obi-Wan and Qui Gon was the only worthwhile thing about TPM!.

According to Lucas he started with episode 4 because he thought it was his best story and it was his first big budget!. If it bombed he would never have gotten to make the rest of the story!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
