Answers:
Acting traditions generally call for villains to "chew the scenery" or be overtly threatening!. I recall when critics commended Klaus Maria Brandauer for his cool-headed, very scary madman in "Never Say Never Again"!. He DID have that "butter wouldn't melt" expression and attitude throughout, never once going the "full-tilt bozo" crazy guy route!.

Vincent Price proved he could play both types though we're more accustomed to what people sometimes call "ham acting" or, as I noted before, "chewing the scenery", which even protagonists do quite often!. In "Witchfinder General", he's evil but icy, very restrained!.

I agree that Joaquin Phoenix overdid it, but I don't care for him as an actor in anything!. Perhaps I'm prejudiced because of being an admirer of River Phoenix!.

But, we still love our overboard villains most of the time, as long as they don't clash too much with the other acting styles!. I just want to know why Sean Penn received the Oscar that Johnny Depp should have won!

I'm trying to think of a "pantomime villain" type who actually ruins a film, and no one has come to mind right now!. If I think of any, I shall add them later!. Maybe that means I like over-the-top villains!. *giggle*Www@Enter-QA@Com
