Action: Batoru rowaiaru (Battle Royale) is a great one, a little graphic, but still very good!.
Horror: ?dishon(Audition) very graphic and very disturbing;
Koroshiya 1(Ichi the Killer) another very graphic movie!.
Anime: Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi(Spirited Away), easily one the best movies by Hayao Miyazaki, which is saying a lot!.
Hotaru no haka (Graveyard of the Fireflies) is another Hayao Miyazaki great, but very, very sad!.
Akira, a great, great movie, nothing else to say!.
Classics: Seven Samurai(Shichinin no samurai), and Yojimbo are both movies that have/were influenced by Spagetti Westerns!.!.!. The Magnificent Seven and Fistful of Dollars are both remakes of earlier said films!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Anything directed by Akira Kurosawa is worth a look!. Ran and The Hidden Fortress are two of my personal favorites
Kinji Fukasaku has directed lots of things as well, though he's probably best known in the West for Battle Royale--which is arguably one of the best films of his career!. He also directed The Green Slime!. Make what you will of that!. I also like Black Rose Mansion, and live in hope of one day finding Black Lizard on DVD
Shinya Tsukamoto is a personal favorite!. Start with something like A Snake Of June, Tokyo Fist, or Vital!. I really like Tetsuo the Iron Man, but it is not to all tastes--and that's putting it mildly!.
And then there's Takashi Miike!. Everybody's heard of Ichi the Killer--and it IS a great movie!. It also deserves its reputation for gore, violence and mayhem!. BUT!.!.!.Miike's also directed kid's movies(Zebraman, Youkai Daisenso/The Great Youkai War), musicals (Happiness of the Katakuris), historical drama(Sabu), Gangster(Fudoh the Next Generation)!. His latest is a Western--Sukiyaki Western Django! Again, make what you will of that!.
Hayao Miazaki should be mentioned as well!.
Grave of the Fireflies And Porco Rosso are two of my favorites!. Other animated movies worth checking out are Akira, Ghost in the Shell:Innocence, Steamboy, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust!.
Gojira--the Japanese theatrical version, not the Raymond Burr one!.
Kwaidan--lovely!.
Tampopo--delightful little comedy!.
