In 1991 Lucas authorized the publishing (he has to authorize every book) of the first of now over 100 books that continued the story!.
The first series, "Heir to the Empire" is the best Post movies book series to this day!. In 1995, Lucas said he was inspired by this series to look back at the movies and making more!.
Over 100 books have told so far, some 40 years of events taking place as early as the day after the battle of Endor!.
here are some examples:
"Truce at Bakura": The rebellion is still catching its breath as the empire has begun a retreat after its defeat at endor!. However on a planet at the edge of the galaxy, a alien force is invading the empire!. Answering a cry for help from the imperial planet of Bakura, the Rebellion realizes they must aid their enemy or all might be lost!.
I dont know of any books (though im sure something is out there) that takes place between Bakura and 4 years after ROTJ!.
"Courtship of Princess Leia" (4 years after): Han and Leia want to get married but one thing stands in their way!. By birth, Leia must marry a prince!. And in steps a very powerfull one!. Han and he battle for her heart!. Han learns of a royal herritage but C3PO discovers its false and nearly stops the wedding but is locked in a closet as Han and Leia marry!.
5 years after ROTJ:
Heir to the Empire: (book 1) The empire is all but extenct!. The New Republic is the new government and has pushed the empire into a corner of the galaxy!. Their best officers died in the Super Star Destroyer over Endor and there are no real leaders left!.
In steps the last Grand Admirl, Thrawn!. He has discovered a fortress on a lost planet where clone machines still work, and a dark jedi guards weapons never used against the rebellion!.
As Thrawn begins his assault on the New Republic, Leia discovers she is pregnent with jedi twins!. Thrawn and the Dark Jedi want the twins and if needed, Leia to make them his servents!.
The NR is kept on edge as they are under seige both from outside and within!.
"Dark Force Rising" (book 2): Charges of treason rise inside the New Republic leadership, and threaten to tear the government apart in the face of invasion!. Luke is drawn to the Dark Jedi master and discovers that he wants more then just to be friends with Luke!.
Leia is stalked by assasins who either want her captured or dead, as she flees across the galaxy to stay a step ahead of them!.
Mara Jade, a former henchmen and right hand woman to the Emporer has a personal hatred of Luke, for she is sure he killed her master, and she will do anything to kill him!.
Lando and Han discover a long lost fleet of powerfull Dreadnaughts and race the Empire to find and seize them, only to discover the empire got to them first, and discover they will be crewed by clones!.
"The Last Command" (book 3): Thrawn is on the verge of victory!. The New Republic is barely holding together!. The government problems are only half over but they cant seem to stop the enemy attack!.
Luke discovers the Fortress and leads a rebel assault against it, where he will face the Jedi master, Mara Jade in a final show down, and a clone of himself, built from the hand he lost on Cloud City!.
When Thrawn begins to lose a major battle and then learns his fortress and clones are destroyed, his own henchmen, who's people worked for the empire, had found out the emporer had betrayed them, kills Thrawn!.
The Empire Retreats and for a long time will not be a threat again!.

"Dark Empire"
Luke is being drawn to the dark side when a clone of the Emporer plans to rebuild the empire!. Luke at least for a time became his Darth Vader!.
It includes the return of Bobba Fett who hasnt died yet!. In ROTJ he falls into the Sarlac Pit but it takes 1000 years to digest things in there!. So Bobba Fett crawled out over time, battered and beaten!. I dont know how that comes out since most of that is in the 3rd book!.
In the end i hear it came down to a battle in a clone room filled with clones of the emporer!. and its han who kills the last clone, forever ending the reign of the Emporer!. (it was a deadly series since it introduced many new weapons)
I have yet to read most of this series, but 20+ years after ROTJ, Luke has begun work to rebuild the Jedi Council!. But from another galaxy comes a enemy immune to the Force!. The New Republic is invaded and i assume taken over but it lasts like 20+ books!.

what happened was, George Lucas the creator of Starwars initially wrote a nine part series rather than a 6 part one, but after they finished episode three, he said in an interview that he was dropping the last three movies because he was done with the star wars franchise and he wanted to move on!. so the movies were never made, but he had already written the basic scripts and screen plays for episodes 7,8 and 9 and he hired some trusted authors that he knew to make the movies into books, and since then several authors have written books on the subject!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
