Yesterday I sat down and watched "Heaven's Gate!." This movie is (in)famous for being the biggest, most expensive flop of it's day!. It runs 3:40 hours, and cost $40 Million 1980 dollars ($120 Million today!?) and was pulled from theaters almost immediately because of poor sales!. It ruined the career of Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter), and tainted Kris Kristoferson, Christopher Walken and others!.
It was a semi-factual account of the infamous Johnson County (Wyoming) Land Wars in which hundreds of people were killed!. The rich, often foreign, speculators hired dozens of mercenaries to execute over a hundred small family-farmers for having the nerve to home-stead on what was considered free (for cattle barons only) range!.
The Governor of Wyoming, and the US government under Benjamin Harrison were among the parties involved in this dark chapter of American history, and Michael Cimino does an ample job telling the story!. The photography, though, is at times heartbreakingly beautiful, but at other times so obscured by dust and smoke as to be unfathomable!.
