I think the line refers to the fact that the two had dated in the past as regular boyfriend-girlfriend!. In those days it was called "going steady"!. You would say things like "Cha Cha goes with Danny"!. After a couple breaks up you would say, "they went together for awhile"!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
I always took that to mean that they dated and they were probably physical once or twice!.
