Question: Really want to become a film director, but how do i start!?
first of all i'm not stupid or anything, its not some childish thing i just thought of, because deep down i really wanted to do this but i thought how the hell am i going to!?
i'm just stuck! i've researched and everything but the information is just not there! i dont have any experience but alot of determination to make it! and i'm 17 nearly 18 in 6 months!.!.
i wrote my summary plot yesterday ( you dont understand i have so many ideas and thats why i want to direct films i write so its my idea) it was so exciting but i was just thinking what the hell next!?!
And where better to ask yahoo answers!
i live in the U!.K Manchester (not in america) in case anybody starts mentioning american film schools lol
one thing i also wanted to know was how does a newbie director get actors in his film!? also what if i wanted to play a small role in my film (if i actually got to that point!!! lol) could i!?

i want to be a director too, but it's really foggy as to ho to get there, ask any successful director, some will say either they went to some prestigious school in america (not useful here) or it was just luck and it just happened!.!.!. wow, great lol i know what you mean, and yes directors can star in their own films!.
if you want to just randomly class yourself as a director one day, you should act like a director as well as you can and recruit some drama students!.!.!.

Check out your local colleges for any television or film courses!. That's a good place to start as you will get experience of being behind the camera, script writing, film and sound editing, and other things like that!. It's a good way to find out what things you'd be good at!. You also might get the chance to act in your fellow students' film projects!. :-)Www@Enter-QA@Com
Here are just a few I found doing a Google search!. You can also look up the film directors (UK ones since they'd be more likely to have been schooled in the UK too) and read their biographies to see where they went to film school (or how they broke into the film directing biz)!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Get some books on filmmaking!. The one I would recommend the most for someone your age would be "How to Make a Film for under $10,000 *and not go to jail*!." Learn about scriptwriting and storytelling in general!. It's a TOUGH industry, regardless of the country, just learn and practice all you can!. Good luck!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Being a film director is probably most akin to being an artist!.!.!. what do you need to do to be an artist!? Make art!.!.!. what do you need to do to direct films!? Make films!.!.!. it really is as simple as that!.!.!. there will never be an advert in a paper for a "Film Director" and likewise there will never be a position vacant!.!.!. it is simply something you do and then based on what you do, you manouver yourself into further positions!.
Do you make films!? All the greats, and alot of the also rans, have been making films since they were children!.!.!. as well it is something that they simply must do!.!.!. a calling, not something they would like to do, but just something they do!.!.!. Raimi, Coppola, Spielberg, Scorsese, Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Meadows, Roberto Rodriguez, Guillermo Del Toro!.!.!. they just make films, that is what they are about!. There are other angles in to the business!.!.!. Oliver Stone, say, got into it through scriptwriting!.!.!. Branagh through acting, Ridley Scott through advertising!.
Think of it like this!.!. if you want to work in a bank, you need to be able to prove you can work in a bank!.!.!. you do this by taking exams and showing them you are of a certain standard!.!.!. how would you do the same in film making!? How would you prove to a film company that you can make films!? Is it knowledge about films!? The fact that you like them and can quote them!? Or is it that you can make them!?
How you get actors in to a film is usually by cheekiness and friends, which mirrors Hollywood quite a lot!.!.!. you get one interested as a freebie and then use them as an enticer for further actors!.!.!. most will be open to opportunities so long as you don't screw them about!.!.!. but you do have to be realistic!. True story - a friend at college had heard that a particular actor had read a version of the source of his script he had written while at college, off the back of that, he wrote a letter to the actor (one of the biggest British film actors of the 70's and 80's, this was the 90's though) asking for his participation in the project and then once he got the go ahead, simply said to a load of other actors that so-and-so was with the project and it went from there!.!.!. he ended up with 3 household names in his 3rd year college film - cheeky ******!
