Got another movie I can't think of?!

Ok this one is even harder for me to remember!. All I can think of is theres a guy who all of a sudden starts getting smarter and reads lots and lots of books after this starts happening!. I remember one scene where he calls his friend in the middle of the night to tell him he figured out how to keep the rabbits or some animal out of his garden with a fence or something!. also, I think in the end he's lying on a hospital bed because he perhaps had a stroke!. I want to say that Dennis Quaid is in it but that is a huge shot in the blue!. I can't remember why he started getting smarter all of a sudden!. also I remember that he tried to sell all the books he read to people but they didn't believe he read all them!.
