Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1950s)!. It's usually considered sci-fi, but it's still pretty scary to me!.
Rosemary's Baby
The Thing From Another World (original version of The Thing!.)
The Night of the Hunter--Robert Mitchum--It's about a psychopath chasing two kids, but the atmosphere is really unnerving!.
House of Wax--original with Vincent Price--much better than the remake!.
House on Haunted Hill --original with Vincent Price--again, much better than the remake!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Man, Les Diaboliques sounds like exactly what you are looking for!. Its a film from 1954, and for Alfred Hitchcock it became a HUGE influence on his 1960 film Psycho!. Diaboliques is a film about a man with a wife and a mistress!. He is a jerk, and so the women devise a plot to murder him!. They do so and dump him in the pool at the boarding school they work at, however, when the body hasn't risen to the surface after several days, they have the pool drained to discover that the body is no longer there!
And the movie takes a lot of twists and turns from there!. Really great, atmospheric film!. I think it is exactly what you're looking for!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
