There are so many great old movies!. I like to rent them at the store!. Yesterday I watched THE SEVENTH SEAL!. It was very good!. Very honest!. When it was over, I turned on the commentary by some movie historian I don't know, and napped on the couch with the windows open!. Sunshine, breeze, and the nice quiet of Swedish speech and gentle English voice notes!. It was a fine Saturday!.

Some other old movies I like:

Arsenic and Old Lace, which is so, so funny!. I had no idea Cary Grant was such a fine comedian!. Hugh Grant's timing and delivery remind me of him!.

A Touch of Evil!. The opening shot (a very long shot) is one of the coolest things I've ever seen in a movie!. The lighting is awesome in this movie!.

It's a Wonderful Life makes me want to be a dad!.

Ben-Hur is one of my all-time favorites!. Stilted acting for the most part, yes!. But Heston is good, nonetheless!. The chariot race is the most ambitious and successful sequence ever staged by Hollywood!. And the final scenes, Christ crucified, the lepers healed, the family restored and reunited - just excellent!. Redemption and reconciliation!. The keys to this movie, and the "keys to the kingdom"!. Great final shot, too!. The sign of salvation in the background, a shepherd guiding his sheep in the fore!. I love this movie!.

Freaks!. Tod Browning's 1932 uber-chilling tale of nightmare!.

Rear Window, which I got to watch again last summer at the old movie palace here in Birmingham, the Alabama Theatre!. This movie was so much fun to watch on the Alabama's gigantic screen, and with an attentive, appreciative audience!. I also saw A Touch of Evil there!. What a place!

The Phantom of the Opera!. When was that movie made!? The 1920s!? All I know is that the Alabama Theatre has screened it at Halloween several times, with the original accompanying movie score being played on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ, which is incredible!.

I might as well tell you all here that my childhood (and I'm just 31 years old) is full of memories of seeing old movies in an old movie palace, with it's mirror-filled lobby, marble floors, intricate art-deco lights, chandaliers, tables, gentleman's chairs, posh bathroom lobby, high inaccessible garrets, dusty old paintings, shadowed, winding corridors, curtained doors, and a cavernous, gorgeous, glowing domed theater!. I credit the health of my imagination to my parents and my brother for taking me to places like this when I was young!. I also credit the old movies I saw, and still see, with a large part of it!. Take your children to intersting places, show them interesting things, interesting movies, and speak to them in interesting words!. They will be so much richer for it!.

This summer, the Alabama will be treating us to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Gone with the Wind (which I must confess, I hate), Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Sound of Music, and - get this - Gremlins!Www@Enter-QA@Com
