Its based on the true story of Sylvia Likens who was murdered and tortured by her babysitter Gertrude Baniszewski, her two kids and two kids from the neighborhood!.
They pushed her down stairs, beat her, burnt her with cigarettes, scalded her with hot water, rubbed salt in her wounds, raped her with a coke bottle, and then beat her to death with a broomstick!. This took place over the course of about 4 months!.
Kate Millett wrote a book relating to the incident - The Basement - but it was not a completely non-fiction account of the incident!.

The movie (the 2007 one) and the book both titled "the girl next door" are also both based on this same crime!. It's about 2 girls who are taken in by I believe an aunt, they are tortured by her and her kids, (and the neighbourhood children as well I believe) one girl more so than the other!. Eventually one is killed!. I have not seen either film or read the book!. After reading a little about the case I wasn't sure I wanted to see either film, it's horrible no one came forward to protect this girl!. I think movies like this can be important because people need to be aware that this does happen but with such a heavy story I might have to skip this one!.
