Victim turns and finds himself face to face with villian!. short pause, scene abruptly switches and you hear the victim screaming and sounds of being attacked!.
Later in the movie (after 2 or three more attacks to set a pattern) Hero is in dimly lit hallway, Noises and movement, scary music starts, When the music stops, hero turns back around face to face with a scared cat!.

Tension, not being able to see the scary monster, this is why I think the earlier alien films worked better that the later ones!.

I think it's all about suspense !. And they concentrate more on the story and make it scary along way not try and not try so hard to my it scary!. Sometimes it seems like they just add this pointless stuff to make it scary!.also blood and gore isn't what makes it scary!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Seeing only brief glimpses of the baddie/alien/murderer!.
Like in Alien 1 where you hardly get to see the actual alien till the very end!.
