!.!.!.well as you, an obviously devoted fellow fan of cult film genre maestro Mario Bava, is probably more than aware of, this is notoriously reputed to be one of the most controversial films that Bava ever produced (!.!.!.at least, at the time), as unflinchingly reflected by all the scandalous sadomasochism, and of course, not to mention, the decidedly disturbed and sexually aggressive female lead, here within!. Although by today's standards, the film is quite tempered and mild, as to almost qualify for 'family fare' these days, I really have to say that some of the subversion of the original message actually still comes through!. And the brilliantly stunning, almost surreal gothic visuals only serve to make it even less obtrusive, and therefore far more acceptable!.

As an engaging story of unrelenting and obsessive female passion, "The Whip and the Body" is most decisively right on the mark, but as a tale related of one person's sociopathic obsession with another, it is even more effective and poignant!.!.!.!.!.

!.!.!.exquisitely filmed with Bava's trademark brilliant and gorgeous look, which effectively relies on long shadows, and the almost-playful dance of light on objects, "The Whip and the Body" remains undeniably stunning to visually engage, even to this today!. It has an undeniable air, which quickly and easily reminds one of the works of Edgar Allen Poe, and the skillful use of a spansive film composition unquestionably enhances the interaction between the depicted stranded characters, with architecture that amazingly enough, almost assumes a separate characterization, all by itself!. Frequent flooding with color light adds to the sense of unreality and dreaminess, which carries the viewing experience into the realm of the mythical!. Romantic in the extreme, despite the S&M scenes, the film lingers with the haunting performances of Christopher Lee and Daliah Lavi, who's characters interrelate in a retortive and engaging tandem, with regards to the sado-masochism and immorality, which is corruptively instilled into their characters; in that sense, as far as the main characters, they are both reflectively guilty!.!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
