Answers:
It was pretty standard right through the 60s, though John Ford did use native actors!. I remember Burt Lancaster in Apache, Chuck Connors as Geronimo, Charlton Heston as a Mexican in Touch of Evil!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It wasn't just limited to Hispanics and Native Americans!. Check out the movie "A Majority of One"!. The movie is based on a play about a jewish widow that travels to Tokyo and is romanced by a Japanese millionaire!. The part of the Japanese millionaire was played by none other then renowed english actor!.!.!. Alec Guinness!. That's right, the same man that played Obi Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars played Koichi Asano, a proper Japanese widower and businessman!. The movie came out in 1961 and at that time Hollywood thought that an asian actor simply would not be accepted by the public to play the lead!. Alec Guinness did not even look Japanese in the movie!.

One more bit of triva!.!.!. Mr!. Asano's character in the movie had a son who was played by a real asian actor!. That actor was George Takei!.!.!. Mr!. Sulu from Star Trek!. In his autobiography George Takei talks about his feelings over the fact that the lead was played by an english actor and not an asian!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

in blazing saddles mel brooks play a native, although that was part of the joke!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
