I agree with you on one thing, The Exorcist didn't scare me at all!. I'd say the best, if not always maybe the scariest, are:
The Shining [original with Jack Nicholson, man he just looks sooo crazy!]
Pet Cemetry [eerie to say the least]
The Ring [the most intriguing story of the lot]
Event Horizon [definitely takes the cake when it comes to sheer scary terror and disturbing too]
Halloween 1 & 2 [the best slasher films out there]
