Why did Obie Wan Kanobie let Darth Vader kill him when he saw Luke, in A New Hop!
Question: He knew he would be of greater service to Luke as a spirit guide than a decrepit old man. Vader didn't kill him, he transcended into the force just before the killing blow. By doing it this way he caught Vader off guard--notice how Vader steps on his robe, trying to figure out what happened. With Vader distracted the Millenium Falcon had a better chance of escaping.

He wasn't killed by Vader. He allowed himself to go to a higher level in the Force. His body was gone after the strike, indicating that he had transformed.
