They do this quite a lot. For example, in the UK, The Golden Compass is called His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass.
because the term 'sorcerer' is more well known in the U.S than in the U.K. I mean who would want to see a movie which they didnt even understand the title. I hear there is some history behind the meaning 'Philosopher', but i'm not quiet sure what. But this history I believe is assoctiated with Britain.

But really, I'm sure it was a marketing thing, advertising is overdone in America.
in the UK the golden compass is called "northern lights" because the tool in the book is not golden and not a compass.Americans might not be stupid but the ones that re-name kids books are.
