Why does everyone (Hollywood and the American public) want remakes so badly?!
Question: It is incredibly rare for a remake to be better than the original. Are writers seriously lacking any creativity and originality anymore that this is the best they can do? It seems that for every 2 new original stories, there are 5 remakes of something else.

Hollywood likes formula. An existing idea is easier to market, for them, then something new and unknown. In other words a lack of courage and laziness are the reasons for so many remakes.
In the larger system, writers write what they are commissioned to write. Directors take the work, actors take the work, crews & other creatives take the work.
Producers/moguls decide on the remakes etc. Why?

We talk about this in my family all the Time, There is no Creativity in Hollywood anymore. Legend was a re-make and soooo many others I am giving you 10 points
because some movies might look better with a remake today
TRON is a great example
in 1980-1982 it was made 100% by computer
imagine it being made today
For $$$, and also because Hollywood are running out of ideas.
