How do iTunes movie rentals work?!

Question: I really want to see Across the Universe but my parents can't take me to movie rental place and I really want to see the movie. How do the rentals on iTunes work? Is it recommended to use? or should I just wait? Can I hook it up to my T.V.? Tell me what there is to know.
