...in reading your description, I'm reminded of a similarly themed classic film, from say, the forties or so, which starred Orson Welles, but in THAT movie, the guy was more of a hypnotist/mesmerizer, rather than a magician, as you mentioned; if I recall, the film was called "Black Magic", or something...
