Answers: also,

why was he the chosen one?

Darth Tyrannus (Count Dooku) cut it off in a saber fight on Geonosis.

Why was he the chosen one?

In the Episode 1: The Phantom Menace; Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Queen Amidala and her staff are stranded on Tattooine.

Once there, they are befriended by Anakin. As the group gets to know him and his mother, Schmi (Anakin's mother) explains that she never had sex to get pregnant with Anakin. Qui-Gon puts together that means that Anakin was concieved by the Force itself; and that would mean he is the chosen one.

The chosen one references a Jedi prophecy from long before the events of the movies. It said that the Sith (Evil Jedi) would be able to take over, but that there would be a person born who would become a Jedi; and that person would remove the Sith and restore the balance (Jedis on top, Sith out of power). Qui-Gon believed Anakin was this person.

We find out in Episode 6: Return of the Jedi that Anakin is the chosen one. While his son Luke (who along with Leia, are the children of Anakin and Queen and later Senator Padme Amidala) is the one who convinces Anakin to go back to the Light Side of the Force; Anakin is the one who kills the Sith Lord (Darth Sidious or Chancellor and later Emperor Cos Palpatine).

Wacking off with his light saber

because Qui Gonn thought he was sexay

Anakin lost his hand in a lightsaber duel with Count Dooku. Dooku sliced it right off.
The Jedi knew that according to some prophecy, Anakin was to be the Chosen one. However, Yoda makes mention in Ep. 3 that perhaps they had misread the prophecy. They thought he was there to destroy any Sith that may have existed and bring "balance" to the force, which turns out to be wrong, because he ends up joining the Sith.
However, at the end of Return of the Jedi, he did sort of accomplish his prophetic "mission". He's the one who killed the Emperor, and in theory when he had done that there were no more Sith left anywhere, thus bringing about the "balance."
(In the books, there really were other Jedi and Sith out there, but for the purpose of the movies, I think that's how it went down)
