Charlton Heston: Hero or Heel?!

Question: He is an epic movie figure. No doubt about that. I have watched most of his big movies, such as: Ben Hur, the Ten Commandments and El Cid. His acting and movie character left a deep impression on me when I was growing up.
Now since he passed away I have the question in my mind: How much of a hero he really was in his personal life.....?

To respond to TL's comment, Heston himself said his beliefs and values didn't change a bit, but the world did. He always believed everyone should be treated equally and that the 2nd amendment should be interpreted broadly. The two ideas aren't mutually exclusive. In his own words, he was promoting "freedom in its truest sense".

Either way, all accounts I've heard describe him as a devoted husband for over 60 years and affectionate father. He was well respected by almost everyone who knew him (even those who didn't agree with him). I think those things say more about what kind of human he was than his political beliefs or his career successes.

WTF, everyone in death is a hero to someone....who are you

That is none of our business. This is the problem with the celebrity obsessed culture we live in at the moment, we forget that the only thing we should expect from actors, singers, writers, etc is that they act and sing and write. Every thing else is none of our concern.

If you speak to members of the NRA, he was a big hero, helping to promote their cause.

he would say otherwise, that he was just a person, called upon to do soeething he believed in.

He said that he would never have done "Touch of Evil" if Orson Welles wasn;t directing, and (at a time when Orson was on the outs), lobbied the studios to give him the reins to direct.

That, my friend, is true class

When he was younger,Heston was deeply involved in civil rights and other so-called "liberal"causes but,as he grew older,he grew more conservative, going so far as becoming a spokesperson for The NRA(talk about a switch in loyalties!) I think he was a complicated man, probably not a heel from all I've been able to glean from interviews and such but,it does make one wonder what could have caused the sudden switch from liberal to conservative

I don't see him as a hero.. , but I don't see him as a heel either.

He was human, he believed what he believed, and thought everyone else should believe the same thing.. His ability as an actor is a given.. he really did a great job.. as for the rest, that was just being human.. You can't blame him for it.. even if you disagree with him.. (which, in most things I'd say I DID disagree)

I'm sure he was a great guy to know.. he seemed nice, and personable for the most part..
