Why does it take so long to make a DVD out of a movie?!

Question: I mean cause, we wait and wait...AND wait for the movie to come out on DVD because we don't want to pay 7 dollars to go see it in theaters.

But then we end up waiting like, 6 months.

Whaddup with that?

DVD's come out much after movies because the movies are still in theaters. After movies leave the theater, they usually go to a budget theater where they spend a bit longer there. Also, in the time between being at the theater and coming out on DVD, they have time to advertise for the DVD instead of just advertising the movie. Also, they hope that word of mouth will spread from the time in between. Sometimes if a movie does not do good, it will be released on DVD sooner to help regain losses from being in the theater. For example, the Ben Affleck movie Surviving Christmas did this a few years ago to try and jump back from its losses at the theater.
However, director Steven Soderbergh, who directed movies like Traffic, Erin Brokovich, and the Ocean's Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen, did an experiment where he released his film in theaters, on DVD and on television on the same day. This experiment did not go well and the movie was a flop.
