Probably gas because just in case he had to use all the explosives, the porch would catch on fire (most likely where the Dark Seekers are)
i think it was gas. because in the end remember how he set the front of his house on fire??? well i think that was probaly what it was for.
i think it was something to hide his scent so that the dark seekers couldnt track him and find his house
