I Just Have To Know...???!

Question: ...in the 'Cask of Amontillado/Black Cat' sequence, in the 1962 Edgar Allen Poe based horror/comedy anthology, "Tales of Terror", Vincent Price plays a renowned wine connesieur (...definetely didn't spell THAT right!!). In the film, he has a wine-tasting challenge against Peter Lorre's character. Now, there is a lot of humor to the scene, especially in watching the way Vincent Price swizzles and swallows the various wine, with some of the funniest facial expressions. My question is, is wine tasting actually conducted this way, in real life, or was Vincent just making that up, or perhaps exaggerating what is actually done???

....it is my understanding that along with being a very extinguished actor and performer, which is pretty much known by most people, it is relatively unknown by most, that the late Vincent Price was also a respected and world-renowned art collector, gourmet cook and wine-tasting expert, in his own right. However, I would assume that Vincent would have wanted to instill some kind of authenticity into the particular scene, which you described, but at the same time, in knowing Vincent's penchance for having a rather gleefully macabre sense of humor, he probably might have been inclined to exaggerate himself, in performing that scene...

He was exaggerating what's actually done. Only thing is, at a real wine tasting, you don't swallow the wine.

Probably a little bit of both. It's exaggerated, but it is also swished in your mouth. It depends on the tester & how they test it. I've seen some funny facial expressions from "professional" testers, but I did remember laughing in school when we watched Vincent Price making his faces.
