I think the nominations were very appropriate for this year.
No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Atonement, Juno, and Michael Clayton were all excellent films.

The movies you listed - Harry Potter 5, Knocked up, Superbad, SpiderMan 3, 300, Hairspray and Beowulf - are not Academy Award material. They are made to be blockbuster pictures. Thats not to say they are not supposed to be good, they just dont compare to the films that were actually nominated - filmmaking wise.

Oscars are given to films that exemplify great filmmaking in all aspects, and those movies you listed do not do that - no matter how popular they were with audiences or how much money they made. The people who nominate and vote for the awards are experts on filmmaking aspects and are in the best position to pick theappropriate movies. The Academy Awards do not usually reflect the wide majority of audience opinions, but they are still the most prestigous film award possible in the industry.

Harry Potter and Spiderman 3 could have recieved Best Visual Effects noms but thats about it. These sequels were not even as good as previous installments of the series. 300 too, but I didnt care for that movie at all and neither did many critics. Beowulf couldnt gotten a Best Animated Picture nom but the films that were nominated were better so it didnt deserve it.

Knocked Up and Superbad were very funny, but the right kind of comedy to get nominated (and as someone said earlier - comedies rarely get nominated). I thought Knocked Up had a chance at Best original Screenplay, but in actuality Academy voters wouldntvote for these types of movies. Plus there is too much improvization for a Screenplay nom.
Hairspray was nominated for a Golden Globe, but again it wasnt Oscar material.

Now having said all that, I though "Into the Wild," "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," "Zodiac," and "Rescue Dawn" were overlooked a little too much in this years awards noms. And although I liked it very much, "Juno" was nominated in too many categories. it should not have been nominated for Best Picture or Best Director.

** Norbit was nominated for Best Makeup.

AND ANYONE WHO REFERS TO "NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN" AS A HORROR MOVIE, HAS ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT AND DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE FILM, THEREFORE SHOULD NOT TRASH IT. And not everyone couldnt have played that part, Javier Bardem gave an absolutley amazing and well deserved winning performance as the killer, Anton Chigurgh.

I would add "I Am Legend" to the list. Movies like "Superbad" and "Knocked Up" usually don't make it to the Oscars. They usually end up making a lot of money for entertainment purposes, but critics usually don't even "grade" those movies.

i dont think no country for old men should have been nominated. It's a horror film. Anyone can play a psycho killer. i think Juno should have won best film.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBEAN 3

Hmm well I think the cinematography award should have been awarded to The zodiac, the movie was visually amazing.

A lot also depends on how hard the studio pushes to push in into your brain

NOT
"There Will Be Blood"-NOT
It should be "THERE WILL BE EXTREME BOREDOM!'
"No Country for Old Men"
Good horror film but best picture, no way
"Easter Promises"
It was just creepy

Should
American Gangster was excellent.
Michael Clayton was excellent
Gone Baby Gone was good except it was directed by BEN AFFLECK.

I heard that the movies were not affected by the strike directly because they had stockpiles of scripts, but which would explain for the bad movies.

i think juno should have never been nominated. especially for best actress. wth was norbit nominated for?

uhh harry potter, spiderman, 300, hairspray and beowulf arent not even good films.. are you kidding? this is the academy awards not the mtv movie awards.

and films like knocked up and superbad are usually not nominated at the academy awards because the genre.. comedy..

edit: totally agree with wch711 =]

I'm a year off, but I thought that Children of Men should have gotten a Best Picture nomination. I mean, Little Miss Sunshine?! C'mon!!

This year, I was disappointed that American Gangster wasn't up for anything. Denzel Washington was amazing.
