Question: I don't remember the actors but do remember some of the plot. A man returned from war and assumed the identity of a man he fought with during the war who had died. He returned and took his role as husband and plantation owner. He made changes and people started to figure it out but he was only doing things for the good and ended up getting hanged in the end. Set in the South just after the Civil War, Laurel Sommersby is just managing to work the farm without her husband, Jack, believed killed in the war. By all accounts, he was not a pleasant man. Original writer Nicholas Meyer walked off the production when Warner Bros. wouldn't let him direct his screenplay. Sarah Kernochan was drafted to rewrite the script and was somewhat bemused to see that it was an Americanized version of "The Return of Martin Guerre" (1983). Warners denied this in a rather obvious attempt not to have to buy the remake rights, but Kernochan insisted that they do before continuing as they weren't fooling anyone. Warners eventually relented and also gave Meyer story credit.
