In the movie Atonement, did Lola know that it was Paul who tried to rape her?!

Question: I just watched the movie Atonement (which I thought was a really good movie). But I was a little confused about something. I know Lola said that her eyes were covered so she didn't know who attacked her, but during the scene right after Lola and Paul got married, Lola passed by her cousion and she looked away, as if ashamed, which made me think maybe she did know it was Paul. Is that possible? And if yes, then why did she marry him? Was it not rape afterall?

My husband also pointed out that at the scene at the dinner table, right before they found out the twins ran away, the "indian burns" that the twins suppossedly gave Lola was mentioned and that Paul quickly jumped in to explain what the twins did to Lola. My husband thought it might have been Paul who caused those bruises. Did anyone hear anything about that?

Just curious as I found that part of the movie a little perplexing.

I read the book and saw the movie, and Lola DEFINITELY knew that it was Paul Marshall. Paul tried to rape her before dinner, so Lola got the "indian burns" from him, not the twins. Although she probably could not see him very well when he was raping her in the woods, she very likely knew it was him because he had tried to attack her before. She did not tell anyone that it was Paul because Briony in a way cleaned up the whole situation by blaming Robbie, and it made more sense for everyone to believe that Robbie did it because he is a poor, lower class boy, and everyone saw the note he sent Cecelia and thought he was a sex maniac. It is unclear why Lola married Marshall. He probably, in a way, forced/coaxed Lola to marry him so that, if Briony ever wanted to change her evidence, Lola couldn't testify against him and say that he raped her.

No she didnt know, or she would have said you can tell she doesnt want to accuse the wrong person. I tought that he may have done the indian burns too tho but they dont explain it

Ya! I think Lola did know it was Paul. There was a little somthing going on with them before, but Lola was ashamed to tell anyone. Paul gave her the burns too. Think she married him because, well she was already with him, and he was wealthy and stable and she was safe with him.

you should read the book. that clears alot of questions.
