it depends on wether the 9 year old is a boy or a girl.
but in general i would say Spiderwick,as it is fantasy and most kids will find that a hell of a lot more interesting than a film about soccer or whatever :]

i haven't seen game plan advertised but was going to take my 8 yr old to see spiderwick as it will get his imagination going as all fantasy

GAME PLAN:
i REALLY like Game plan. it was
good.
(im 13) and i acually think its a good movie for kids younger than me, it was a bit child-ish but you will love it.
SPIDERWICK:
i didnt like it. dont watch it.

I have a seven(almost eight) year old. He was all about Spiderwick when he saw the advertisments. I could go ask him what Game Plan was and he wouldn't have a clue.
both are good, because Spiderwick is like a magical adventure. and Game Plan is a funny disney movie. i'd go with Spiderwick if its a boy.
Personally I think there is a very obvious answer.
My daughter of age 13, started to read the Spiderwick series, but she stopped reading it as she found the characters frightening and vile. Later on, she saw the advert for the movie and the characters looked like the came from a disturbed mind. She could not believe they would make such a film and also rate it a PG.
Now for the Gameplan, it looks like a children friendly, comedy movie, also it is a U which proves that it is completley suitable choice.
So to sum it all up, I think that the Game Plan is the best choice. You could always try Horton hears who.
