I've only seen the film and loved it, and I felt sorry for him. The ending was very moving, and the film is sad.

However, my mum also thought that he was selfish, and she didn't like his cocky attitude.

In what way was he mean and selfish? I didn't get that same impression. At the end, he envisioned himself returning home to his family. And it appeared that at one point, he was ready to return home. He attempted to cross the river to the opposite bank but the water was too high so he returned to the bus.

The movie might not mean he actually is selfish =)

I saw the movie in theatres and I'm actually watching it right now with my family!

I haven't read the book or seen this movie, but I watched the documentary Grizzly Man about this man, and I felt he was troubled and misguided. He did not seem selfish, except for the concerns about his girlfriend. Maybe you would like to watch Grizzly Man, I was able to get it from blockbuster online.

He was a little self centered, but he had been hurt deeply by his father. After he figured out what was truly important in life, it was too late...nature had caught up with him...it was a very sad, poignant story.
