its just a matter of choice if directors want to use film or digital. digital is being used more often now but digital is used a lot more in independent filmmakers than big studio directors. big studios still use film but it is a matter of time before everything is digital. the monitors are actually for both. they usually see the live action but they also re-play it, that is used in both digital and film.

More movies now a days use digital recording. Its easier for high definition and other things like that. Editing is also easier.
