Why are remakes allowed? i'm talking about movies, music, etc.?!

Question: I was just listening to a song made in the year 2003 and there is a remake of it this year by the jonas brothers apparently. I mean, its only been 5 years. I just don't get it. Don't artists have any rights?

Of course the artist has rights. The right to make more money by selling the rights to their music.

I agree. I hate how unoriginal everything is now. No one can come up w/an original idea anymore. And what else grinds my gears is that the writers go on strike because they think they deserve more. So they get paid more, and what do they do?? Come back w/idea's for MORE REMAKES!! A monkey could say, Hey lets remake Robocop!! Why do they deserve more money, better healthcare, anything!! They don't make anything original. They just decide to remake movies w/todays actors. They aren't any better then the actors of yesteryear.

As long as you pay the people who originally made the product something that the two of the parties agree upon, then you can use it. Otherwise, the only way you can use someone elses material, is if you don't make a profit off of it.

If remakes weren't allowed, we would be missing a lot of amazing, classic films. And, a lot of covered songs have become hits, too; why lose a song to obscurity?

Movie remakes:
John Huston's The Maltese Falcon
A Star Is Born~Judy Garland
A Star Is Born~Barbra Streisand
The Mummy~Christopher Lee
The Mummy~Arnold Vosloo
Mighty Joe Young~Charlize Theron
Frankenstein: The True Story~TV miniseries
The Lost World (1960)~based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel~~The first version is a Silent released in 1925.
The Lost World (2001 TV miniseries)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)~Disney's version

I could list many more films that are remakes of a novel or earlier film but have become more famous than their predecessors. Many classic films are remakes, but most people don't realize how often a story has been filmed before.

Song covers~which could be a very lengthy list:
Frankie Valli~I Can't Take My Eyes Off You (You're Just Too Good to Be True)
Jose Feliciano~Light My Fire~~very soon after The Door's version!
The Beatles~Ain't She Sweet, Roll Over Beethoven, Twist & Shout, etc.
Grand Funk Railroad~The Locomotion
Kylie Minogue~The Locomotion
Echo & the Bunnymen~People Are Strange (on the soundtrack of "The Lost Boys")
Ike & Tina Turner~Proud Mary~~very soon after Creedence Clearwater Revival released their version
Guns N' Roses~Knockin' on Heaven's Door

I'm sure that everyone could name a favorite covered song. Instead of remake, it's called a cover. It's something singers, musicians, groups, etc., do: cover previous hits. Frank Sinatra did it, and so did The Beatles. Covering hits goes back forever, even before there were recordings of any kind. There are excellent covers, OK ones, and awful ones; there always will be.

There always will be remakes that are not as good or just plain awful. But, there are many others that succeed.
