I heard that the father in the movie admitted on his death bed that it was just a hoax, and was made-up because they were over their heads w/ debt.
I don't know if it is true or not, but it is funny as hell if it is!!!

The house actually exists, it's in Amityville on Long Island. In November of 1974 it was occupied by the DeFeo family. Family member Ronald DeFeo shot and killed his parents and six siblings in the house while they slept. In December of 1975, George & Kathleen Lutz and their 3 kids moved into the house and supposedly all kinds of paranormal stuff started happening. They fled the house after 28 days. Some say they made it all up.

the house is real though. and it's all suppose to be based on a true story. this guy supposedly killed his family or something, then another family moved in there and a bunch of weird paranormal activity went on and they left the house after living there for about a month. i've seen the remake of it, that came out a year or so ago, i wasn't impressed. i'd recommend highly, not to rent it, or any of the ammityville movies [they have a bunch of different ones out] i don't really believe that it's a true story. cause apparently that guy who killed his family was cursed by the house or something. houses don't kill people, people kill people.
it's a kinda creepy movie.
The haunting was a hoax's but the murders really happened. There's a great book called the ametyville conspiracy that has tons of info.
