What impact has film had on society?!

Question: give me some ideas?

Answers: give me some ideas?

Wow, that's a really tough question, mostly because it's next to impossible to measure any causal link between what's shown in theaters and what moviegoers then go out and do in their own lives. There are a lot of claims, for example, that kids are influenced by scenes of violence or cigarette smoking in movies, but the research is inconclusive.

Still, I think there are two likely effects of movies on society. The first is to reinforce tendencies that are already there -- fascination with celebrity, unquestioning acceptance of consumerism (think how many Hollywood movies look like catalogs for lovingly-photographed consumer products), insularity (Hollywood movies are not very interested in parts of the world where they don't speak English, except to portray them as exotic and dangerous places), desensitization to violence (by this, I mean an acceptance of violence as a common occurrence in real life, not an encouragement to viewers to commit violence), and a national sense of optimism (all those happy endings). Mainstream films rarely examine or question the assumptions by which we live our lives (the "system" generally works, people get what they deserve, the world beyond the horizon doesn't much matter), so they reinforce these perceptions.

But the second effect comes from those movies that do question those assumptions. They force issues to become part of the national conversation -- I'm thinking of documentaries like "Sicko" (health care) or "An Inconvenient Truth" (climate change), as well as dramas like "Crash" (the pervasiveness of racism) and "Brokeback Mountain" (homosexuality) and even comedies like "Knocked Up" and "Juno" (unwanted pregnancy, abortion, and adoption). Such movies may or may not change anything in society, but they do get people talking about issues they might not otherwise have thought about.

There's a third effect in that some movies are so popular that they become part of the cultural vocabulary, a shorthand anyone can use. We may all have geographical, political, religious, or ideological differences, but everyone can talk about Indiana Jones or Jaws or Titanic and be instantly understood. So Ronald Reagan can call his space-based missile defense plan "Star Wars," or pundits can refer to a president trying to distract from scandal by drumming up a war "Wagging the Dog." So movies give us a common language to talk about things as far flung as politics, technology, public morality, etc.

please give me some ideas you mean.

It has influenced the way we live in all areas.
