That he can play a few different characters, he doesnt always play the same type... And he makes it look like he adapts to his other characters easy, he also draws you in to the character that he plays and makes the movie real.
Ive a few movies of his that I just love.. Saving Private Ryan, Green Mile, Big - loved him in that, Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Turner & Hooch, The Burbs, Bachelor Party... Oh the list can go on :)
He is just a good guy all round and a terrific person and actor :)

Im refering to saving private ryan, and castaway. Granted castaway was not a good film but if you think about it is there another actor out there that can keep an audience entertained by themselves for basically an entire movie?

for a long while i was sort of stumped by his appeal to others. and i certainly could never figure out how he managed to win two oscars. but he's not a bad actor and has made some pretty decent movies, particularly the ones he did with spielberg (saving private ryan, catch me if you can, and the terminal). maybe a foreigner could make a point of his success being symptomatic of a larger embrace of mediocrity by americans, but he is inarguably likable and that's the key to any success he's had. and probably those two oscar wins as well.
i like him because he's so personable. my favorite movie of his is "big"
