Is the IMDb "Top 250" important to you?!

Question: Is it? If it is, why is it?

Answers: Is it? If it is, why is it?

IMDB's Top 250 is a joke, The Shawshank Redemption at #2, Amelie at #40 and Sin City at #77, hell, even Pirates of the Caribbean is on that list (damn those 12 years old "OMG Johnny Depp is so hot" chicks).

Pathetic list, let alone the fact that most people either hand out 1's or 10's.

It's not "important", but yeah I use it when I need a good movie to rent.

Because of it I saw Pulp Fiction, Schindler's List, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Shawshank Redemption, the Prestige, and a whole lot of others.

Well, I don't personally agree with all the top movies, but I have different tastes. But I will use it to rent movies I haven't seen yet.

I look at it as a third way to rate movies.
First, I'll look at the critical reviews a movie gets just to filter out some of the crappy ones (since I don't have time to see EVERY movie myself).
Second, the box office results may turn me on to a movie because the buzz of a big blockbuster makes you want to see what all the excitement is about. Although popularity rarely translates into the movie actually being any good, I realize that of course.
Third, IMDB is sort of a poor critical list. It is more a reflection of popularity. The more controversial movies that should be rewarded for originality, are ultimately punished by IMDB voters because they like more conventianal stuff. The list itself is not that bad, but the order is pretty lame. Just remember the most "vanilla" movies are going to be highly rated and the more exciting and interesting movies are lower on the list than they should be.
Oh and non-english movies are also way lower than they should be because people don't like subtitles.
