I do not believe his crime is mentioned in the movie or the novel and so I don't think anyone would know the answer to this question.

I think he killed his wife .Im not 100 percent sure though

I don't think that he ever says what he is in jail for.

Hmm I would say a double homicide killing his wife and the guy she was screwin.

I assumed he killed his wife and, when he was sentences, life meant LIFE

People are getting James Whitmore character (Brooks) confused with the Tim Robbins character (Andy). Brooks' crime is never mentioned.

In the story by Stephen King (Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption) - that the movie was based on, Brooks Hatlen had killed his wife and daughter after a losing streak at poker. Maybe Brooks in the film was not as tough.
