Clint Eastwood~The Beguiled (1971)
IMDB synopsis:
"During the civil war, injured Yankee soldier, John McBurney (Eastwood) is rescued on the verge of death by a teenage girl (Pamelyn aka Pamela Ferdin) from a Southern boarding school. She manages to get him back to the school, and, at first, the all-female staff and pupils are frightened of their "guest". As he starts to recover, one by one he charms them, and the atmosphere becomes filled with jealousy and deceit."
Recently, movie channels have been airing this, so perhaps it will receive the recognition it deserves. I've been trying to include it on suggestion lists.

Al Pacino~Cruising (1980)
IMDB synopsis:
"A serial killer brutally slays and dismembers several gay men in New York's S&M and leather districts. The young police officer Steve Burns (Pacino) is sent undercover onto the streets as decoy for the murderer. Working almost completely isolated from his department, he has to learn and practice the complex rules and signals of this society. Barely seeing his girlfriend, he finds that the work starts changing him."
Of all his films, I think this role took the most guts and showed how brave an actor he is. Amazingly, the film remains under attack and is still considered controversial.

Jack Nicholson~Goin' South (1978)
IMDB synopsis:
"Henry Moon (Nicholson) is captured for a hanging offense by a posse when his horse collapses during his attempted escape to Mexico. But, there is a post-Civil War law in the small town that any single or widowed woman can save him from the gallows by marrying him. Julia Tate (Mary Steenburgen in her film debut) needs a man to help her work her mine and marries him. The sheriff (Christopher Lloyd) makes it very clear to Moon what the consequences of his leaving Julia will be. The two try to form a relationship based on necessity in which they have nothing in common."
That synopsis does not communicate the raucious comedy of this hilarious Western, which I've watched countless times. Jack never looked as scroungy and disreputable as he does in this film, which is filled with great character actors: Danny DeVito, John Belushi, Veronica Cartwright, Luana Anders, Richard Bradford, Tracey Walter, Ed Begley, Jr., and Lucy Lee Flippin.

Robert De Niro~Flawless (1999)
IMDB review:
"Flawless' is an offbeat story about Walter Koontz (De Niro), an ex-cop who suffers a stroke and loses partial ability to speak. In an effort to regain some of his speech capabilities, it is recommended that he take singing lessons. So, he decides to ask his female-impersonator neighbor, Rusty (Philip Seymour Hoffman), to be his singing teacher, despite his homophobic nature. In this story about hatred, bigotry and reconciliation, Walter learns that the people he hated treat him better than those he thought cared about him."
For me, the role looks like such a demanding one because an actor's impulse is to speak somewhat clearly when delivering lines. Every syllable spoken after the stroke has to be considered, even when it makes him barely intelligible at times. There is such realism because he does not cave in to "cleaning up" speech patterns, and his struggle is believable. It reminds me of watching Daniel Day-Lewis in "My Left Foot". While I could do without some bits in the film, De Niro's performance is remarkable. However, future Oscar-winner Hoffman, not De Niro, received various nominations!

That leaves me with Bruce Willis and John Travolta. I'll have to think about those two.
