Judah Ben-Hur from Ben Hur (1959) or Maximus from Gladiator (2000)?!

Question: Which of the two was the most interesting charecter and say why?

Answers: Which of the two was the most interesting charecter and say why?

The two are quite parallel but their "backstories" are hardly comprehensible - - both have youth/child background with their adult antagonist - - the obsessed opponent seems quite capable of utter capriciousness and cruelty to anyone in his way. The minor characters in GLADIATOR however reveal that the whole project is rather flimsy - - the wife and child of Maximus are more or less just uninteresting and fodder for the brutal killing machine that was Rome at its apex. We have some sense that the world is bigger than all this with Ben-Hur and the run-ins he has with pirates and the Teacher from Nazareth. I do enjoy GLADIATOR but put BEN-HUR in a higher category since it does demonstrate that it has learned from its chariot and toga predecessor films. GLADIATOR as far as awareness of the Senate-Emperor relationship is dim and wrong at times (scriptwriter should have studied his Roman history for the era depicted!).

Maximus from Gladiator because his character (although both should reflect characters of the real roman times) more modern whereas the other dude (Ben Hur) plays more of a character from the 1950's. The behaviour or personality of the 1950's people is not something that I can associate with whereas modern behaviours of the 21st century are more realistic to me. I know, the best would have been if they had both acted the way men acted in the roman times but that's just expecting too much from actors as we are not too familiar with the facial expressions, reactions, body language etc. of these people from ancient times.

Judah ben- Hur because it went more into detail. it showed alot more of the time then. You got the feeling of what history waslike back then better in that movie. but dont get me wrong, Gladiator is an awesome movie too

Ben Hur is miles ahead of Maximus. As is the film.

Maximus because he was fight for what to free the people .
