No Country For Old Men's ending.......?!

Question: The film closes with Bell at home, in retirement, reflecting on his life choices. Bell relates to his wife, two dreams he had, both involving his deceased father, also a lawman. He reveals that in the first dream he lost "some money" that his father had given him; in the second dream, he and his father were riding horses through a snowy mountain pass. His father, who was carrying fire in a horn, quietly passed by Bell with his head down and was "going on ahead, and fixin' to make a fire" in the surrounding dark and cold. When Bell got there, his father would be waiting. Bell closes the dream narrative, and the film, with the final words: "And then I woke up."

What do the two dreams mean? Explain it in the simplest way you can please.

The first dream simply shows him relating to his father.

The second is meant to mirror his decision not to chase Anton Chiguhr. He knows that he may die or end up like his friend in the wheelchair if he pursues the killer. His dream signifies his desire to continue living and moving ahead, and to die a natural death as his father did.

I left the cinema confused aswell!!

I was very disappointed with the ending, on the DVD it says it has a heart stopping final moment. I didn't find that heart stopping at all. Confused at best. Can't tell you much now, let me watch it again.

That made no sense... Way too many loose ends that weren't tired up....

Sure it's nice that the Sheriff is retiring but come on. Why did they bother with Tommy Lee Jones in the first place. He barely had a part in the movie and basically you combine the sheriff character with the coin tossing psycho killer and you've got two-face from Batman Forever! At least Batman made sense when it ended....
