They're drama, I wouldn't class them as Thriller. This trilogy is a must watch, excellent movies really.
I suppose there are elements of action sequences that might suggest the THRILLER genre but I would call them drama at a high production level for the 1970s when Coppola took them from the Mario Puzo material/bestseller.

It can be considered as a thriller but I see it as an epic drama. The first two are two of the best movies ever, so I would watch them ASAP. You'll love following this family and characters throughout the trilogy.
