In "Into The Wild", what was the name of the Hippie commune or village!

Question: The main character and a hippie couple go to some hippie commune or village. I think it was called "the slabs" or something like that. There was live music, markets, and communal living in trailers.

What was this place called in the movie?

And is it a real place?

Yes, it's a real place. Or, at least it was when Jon Krakaur wrote the book on which the film is based. I don't know if it's still there anymore, but it was definitely real.

It's located near the Salton Sea in California.
