Why is Daniel Day Lewis so bloody selective in the movies he plays in?!

Question: I mean, here's a brilliant actor who makes like one major hollywood film every five years, isn't this odd?

No, because he is a brilliant actor BECAUSE he's so selective. He completely immerses himself in each role he does. I read that on the set of Gangs of New York, he got pneumonia because he insisted on constantly being in character and costume during the weather they were shooting in... THEN he refused to seek treatment for it until they were sure he would be deathly ill if he didn't go to the hospital.

He dedicates himself to the ART of acting. He studies a character's way of life for years, sometimes - going into the profession they are in and learning everything he can about the character so he can become that person. Which is why he's so amazing on screen.

A steady paycheck for a blockbuster is not what he is after. Not that there is anything wrong with a blockbuster... but that is not what he is interested in as much as the material and the chance to grow in his profession.

p.s. Did you know he's also married to the late Arthur Miller's daughter, Rebecca Miller? I just thought that was really interesting. LOL

p.p.s. In answer to your additional details... who's to say he can't get really good roles regardless of his age??? In most of the roles where he's gained so many accolades, he plays a much older man than is usually the star of most films now.
What really works in his favor is actually being an aging male. Most male actors tend to get much better parts as they age... look up any interview with an aging actress. This is something they ***** about quite a lot. (I think there is some validity to that argument, btw... but that's another can of worms. LOL)

Maybe he doesn't want to risk acting in a piece of crap.

what would you rather be known for.
5 kick a** movies or 15 b-rated movies?

He's not being snotty. He'd simply rather take well-crafted material(which is all to rare)and do that than make films just for the money. It's called"integrity"

well no its good that he cares. that says that he cares very much about his roles. and is picky. and for him to do a role it has to be very special. i respect that. he is an excellent actor.

Well i'm sure he work on other movie projects. But i don't think he can predict the success of any of his movies.
