Ok, I'm going to describe it as best as I can (and I only came up with this conclusion after watching about 50 times!):

It starts with the birth of man, cro-magnon. Through their basic survival skills, they learn that they can use the bones of other animals as weapons and tools. They begin to defend their territories using these weapons. The monolith appears and it is basically this all-powerful thing (it's purpose is never really known). Fast-forward thousands of years. It's the future (2001), civilization has flourished to the point where space travel is a common thing. A group of astronauts go to a moon dig site where the monolith has been recovered. During their mission, their computer, HAL, becomes so advanced, he develops a mind of his own, and decides to take over the humans.

It's basically a circle of life thing, such as this:

Man creates tool. Tool becomes advanced equipment, such as a computer. Computer dominates man.

That's the best I can figure. It's a good movie and I suppose Stanley Kubrick had intended for people not to put much thought into it (actor Rock Hudson said it was horrible after attending a screening). Despite not understanding it, what did you think of it overall? Visuals? Costumes?

I could try to explain it.

Remember it is all your own interpretation...so what ever you think it is it is.

There is two parts to it though.

the first part is where the monkey is holding the bone...that part is when you see the monolith...the monolith represents man and his ability to use tools...So we have the ability to have tools....anyway...Hal Is a really complex tool doing all sorts of things that can surpass man because it's a really good tool...so he thinks he should kill off humans cause there not as intelligent as a machine....Then when that guy is floating in that room, Hal being a really complex machine, is brought down by a simple tool...The screw driver.

So basically it is about tools...

There is another part to it though I am not sure I remember it...It has to do with the baby though.

I didn't get it that much either.
buuuuuuuh buuuuuh bahhhhhhh bum bahhhhhhh

Don't worry hun. I didnt like it either. I know it is supposedly one of the best movies of all time but I just plain didn't like it.

its a social commentary on how our society is heading towards being totally in need of machines...and what if the machines turned against us.....the AI of the ship begins to feel that the human is just getting in his way and trys to killl him..."I'm afraid I can't let you do that Dave"...classic

You do know there is a sequel. If you are curious you could watch it and maybe find some answers there or you could try the books.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/plot...

Or you could just read the book, but I suppose this might be better.

Welcome to the party, pal!

Some say that it is a kind of death and rebirth through the cosmos, about the infineness of life.

If you have read the book, it is even MORE confusing.

A beautiful looking film that the last 20 or so minutes are a puzzlement

Watch it again and you will have a new view on it. That's a movie that needs to be watched a few times.

Let me take just one part of the movie...
remember in the beginning...The Dawn of Man... where the Monolith first appeared to the apes?
You will find many interpretations but, to me, this metaphor represented when God first placed intelligence into the ape...
the Monolith represented that intelligence.

Notice that right after that, the ape figured out (using his newly found intellect) that he could use an animal's skeletal thigh bone as a weapon to fight off his enemies or, to bring down an animal for food.

i really hate to go into detail

but watch "2010: the Year we make contact"

it goes more into what happened to Hal and what went wrong.

there are also 2 follow up books: 2060 and 3001

their a great book series.

wish they would finish making the last two movies.
there was talk of it a few years ago.
