a few things you should consider:
make sure everyone on camera (actors, extras, etc.) sign a release form saying you have their permission to film them.
many kids underage may need parental consent. - you want to do this so you have the right to show your film publicly such as film festivals.
spend time doing rehearsals. shooting is not the time to be creative - let the actors improvise and have fun during rehearsals - when the camera rolls, you should know what you want. rehearsals is where you'll hear your dialogue spoken... don't be afraid to change it. or let the actors add to it - as long as helps the story. (remember action/dialogue should always do one of two things: advance story or reveal character - if it doesn't lose it.)
spend time getting the lighting right. and the focus.
consider creating storyboards so you know exactly what you want to shoot. the more planning you do before you shoot, the better the shoot will go.
if you're shooting on film - consider shooting a quick/test version on video to see how things work out.
put a lot of thought into how your film will edit together - can your transitions be better.

hope this helps
