Do you buy movies before seeing them? If so, why?!

Question: I have a couple of friends who would rather purchase a dvd than see it in the theatre or rent it. I just don't get why they want all of these dvds of movies they may or may not like lying around the house. Can you explain this to me?

i often buy movies before viewing them. i usually don't buy brand new movies so it's not like i am spending $20 but rather something lower than $10... i just feel that it is better to purchase a movie that i can own forever (even if i don't like it) because it usually ends up costing me more to go to the theater to view a movie and i would rather not rent a movie and deal with having to take it back in just a couple days. and you should have a good idea of what your are purchasing anyway... sure every once in a while you get a bad movie but you should be able to get something you like most of the time

I've only done it once, and I regretted it. I own a lot of DVD's but I usually get used copies and I only buy ones I KNOW I will watch over and over.

I never buy a movie before I see it...because if I end up not liking it that's like $20 I just wasted on a movie I'll never watch again...

I like the fact that I could just keep it forever, i'll never be bored, and I'll have hundreds of options. But if there is a movie that i bought and didn't like, I could just go turn it in for some cash back or get another movie. Simple.

My friends have done this too, and I don't understand it. To answer your question, I believe there are two factors involved: The ones I know that do that tend to be "shopaholics", and it's just part of their daily internet or mall routine to buy something. Also, a lot of people want a big movie "collection." They may not even think each film is the best they've ever seen, but some people just like having ANY movie on in the background at all times. I guess it helps them concentrate!

In my opinion, I'd much rather do Netflix, rent, or get one free from the library since I rarely watch a movie repeatedly anyway. Ah well!

yes i have, but only if it is in a series that i already have. if it looks good and i'm interested i go rent it first before buying. i have been disappointed in too many movies to go out and buy them just from the previews.

I don't buy movies on D V D, I belong to a club and hire them, once i have seen them I don't necessarily want to see them again.

I like the chance of not knowing whether i will or not. Even if its a bad movie its an experience. Often i will buy dvds on friends and family recommendations or a read reviews on the internet or magazines. But why not? Its good too see a wide range of different movies even if you dont like some of them. Its also good to keep them. I love movies and its nice to see them all lined up on a shelf. you can tell loads about a person just by looking at their dvd collection.
