Gavin was only the attorney for Mr. Rose (Micheal Douglas). Otherwise, it would have been a conflict of interest and unethical, and Gavin could have been disbarred. I don't think that they ever showed her attorney. Quote: [Finding out that they are going to get a divorce]
Mr. Rose: And you better get yourself a damn good lawyer!
Mrs. Rose: Best your money can buy!
By the way, the fellow in the office with Gavin was a fellow who Gavin talked out of seeking a divorce by relating his long tale of the "War of the Roses".
1. Mrs. Rose (Barbara) attempted to win Gavin's favorable influence in the case by engaging in sex with him but he turned her down. Gavin said that it would be "illegal".
2. Mrs. Rose's bruises were evidence of spousal abuse.
3. There was destruction of Mr. Roses' (Oliver's) prized car (a Morgan 4/4)
4. There was destruction of private property abd city property (the grass between the curb and the sidewalk).
5. Maybe attempted murder, i.e., locking Oliver in the sauna, driving over Oliver with a truck while he's in his car, dropping a 200+ lb., crystal chandelier on Oliver, etc.
6. Throwing a used Kleenax (after blowing his nose) in the food and then urinating on the fish might be considered a health hazard but not to the public.
7. Barbara accused Oliver of sabotaging (messing with) her business so she probably could have sued him for irrebutable damages and/or loss of income.
8. Unreported fire in the living room when the Christmas tree caught on fire.
9. Barbara caused Oliver physical injury when she gave him that crushing squeeze around the middle while in bed and injured his "private part" while up in the attic.
10. Oliver ran over her cat, killing it.
11. They both caused a public disturbance with offensive profanity and excessive noise.
12. While in the process of the divorce, neither party was to start selling off property (items) that could be considered claimable assets and part of the end settlement. Oliver accused Barbara of selling a couple of his Staffordshire dog statuettes worth a $1,000. Gavin said the he didn't have proof.
13. If there is such an obscure law that allows a couple in the midst of divorce can continue to live in the same house, they were far from peaceful!

Great movie! I haven't seen it in a long time but I wouldn't really classify anything in the movie that was against the law except for when Mrs. Rose ran over Mr. Rose's car (great scene btw). Attempted murder maybe? But you have to remember that they're married and they were causing a public scene, I'm sure neither one of them would've actually killed eachother if it came down to that. Gavin was Mr. Rose's lawyer but she tried to seduce him to get him to go easy on her or to persuade him to drop her husband as a client. This movie shows just how nasty divorces can be.
